Anatomy of the Female Pelvic Floor

For understanding of what takes place during pelvic prolapse in women, some basic knowledge about the anatomy of the female pelvic floor, its supporting structures and the surrounding pelvic organs is required.

In a woman's healthy functioning pelvis, the pelvic organs are held in place by supportive muscles and ligaments.  The vaginal vault is the upper inside end of the vagina and has four compartments: one compartment closest to the front part of the body, one compartment including the wall of the vagina, a middle compartment including the cervix and a final compartment including the wall of the vagina at the back side of the body.
