A woman can minimize her risk of developing any type of pelvic prolapse by doing the following:
- Regularly performing Kegel exercises. WebMD has helpful information on technique and how often to perform these exercises for optimal pelvic health.
- Eat a diet full in fiber and drink plenty of water. A healthy diet and adequate water intake can help stave off constipation – a frequent contributing cause of pelvic prolapse.
- Lift with Care – while every woman will most likely need to lift something heavy during her lifetime, doing so correctly (while bending at the knees and using the legs vs. waist) and not adding too much weight to the load can help.
- Cough Control – if you suffer from a chronic lung condition like Bronchitis, make sure that you're managing it well under medical care with appropriate cough suppressants. Controlling the length of time spent coughing and the severity of the cough can help to reduce pelvic prolapse risk.
- Maintain a Healthy Weight – since overweight and obesity are significant contributing causes of female pelvic prolapse, it is important to understand that any added weight on the pelvis can increase the risk of developing the condition. Maintain a healthy weight by adhering to a healthy diet and exercise plan.
