Robotic Surgery Q & A

What is the robot-assisted da Vinci® Surgical System?

The state-of-the-art da Vinci is a computer-enhanced system that is comprised of two components – robotic arms that hold the pencil-thin surgical instruments and a surgeon’s console, from where Dr. Ramin controls the robotic arms.

How is surgery performed with the da Vinci system?

The instruments move at the direction of Dr. Ramin’s hands while he views the operative field via a highly magnified 3-D image on a television screen. The tips of the instruments have six degrees of freedom, which allows them to move like tiny wrists around the targeted tissue. Non-robotic surgical instruments, whether open or laparoscopic, don’t have this degree of motion and flexibility.

What are the benefits of the da Vinci system?

The da Vinci system provides superior precision and range of motion of the surgical instruments, which is necessary for delicate surgeries, such as those performed on the urinary system.

As an advanced form of minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, the da Vinci system offers benefits such as smaller incisions, less bleeding, less risk of infection, and faster recovery time than traditional open surgery. It’s also a safe and effective option for those patients who, for religious or other reasons, do not wish to accept transfused blood during a surgical procedure.

Open or traditional surgery often requires incisions that cut through skin, muscle, and other healthy tissue to provide access to the targeted treatment area. The minimally invasive approach used with the da Vinci system decreases the trauma to surrounding tissue, which helps decrease your recovery time.

What surgeries can you perform with the da Vinci system?
