Erectile Dysfunction Q & A
What is erectile dysfunction?
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is defined as the inability to achieve or maintain an erection that is firm enough for sexual intercourse. It’s a relatively common issue that may affect as many as 30 million men in the United States.
It’s perfectly normal for men to have periodic problems achieving or maintaining an erection. This may be due to stress, a viral illness, or other temporary issues. However, persistent or recurring ED is related to underlying conditions that typically respond well to treatment. Effective treatment begins with understanding the cause of your ED.
What causes erectile dysfunction?
ED can occur when:
- There is not enough blood flow into the penis
- The penis cannot trap blood during an erection
- Nerve signals from the brain or spinal cord do not reach the penis
- Cancer treatments near the pelvis affect the functionality
Many medical conditions and emotional issues are linked to an increased risk of ED, including:
- Performance anxiety following an episode of ED
- Depression
- Diabetes, which can damage nerves and blood vessels
- High blood pressure
- Cardiovascular disease, which can block blood flow to the penis
- Obesity
- Sedentary lifestyle
ED may also be a side effect of certain medications you take, such as beta-blockers for high blood pressure. While the risk of ED does increase as you age, it’s not a “natural” component of the aging process. Many men experience normal sexual function well into their 80s.
What is the treatment for ED?
Dr. Ramin starts with a physical exam and diagnostic tests to identify the underlying cause of your ED. Tests may include urine studies, blood tests, and an ultrasound to examine the strength of blood flow through the vessels that feed the penis.
Your treatment is based on findings from your exam and tests and may include:
- Oral medications or injections to increase blood flow to the penis
- Testosterone therapy
- Treatment for underlying conditions, such as diabetes
- Surgery to place a penile implant when conservative measures fail
Increased exercise, weight loss, and decreased alcohol intake have also shown beneficial in improving erectile dysfunction.
There’s no reason to live with ED. For an accurate diagnosis and an effective treatment plan for ED, schedule a visit with Dr. Ramin. Call the office or book your appointment online.
